FAQs

What kind of projects do you take on?

I offer project-based work, advisory support, training and short targeted pieces of consultancy or publishing assignments. The structure and approach will be tailored to your requirements. For example, some clients prefer a defined one-off project with clear outcomes, while others benefit from regular sessions that provide continuity and help maintain momentum. Take a look at my Signature Services for more information.

What sorts of organisations do you work with?

I work with a range of organisations across the publishing industry, including academic publishers, educational publishers and non‑profits that run their own publications as part of their wider mission‑driven activities. Clients typically come to me at points of expansion or transition, or when operational pressures are building, and they need an experienced expert to help them move forward with clear structured support.

Can you help us define what we need?

Yes, clients often contact me initially with a sense of the problem rather than a fully-formed brief. Part of my role is to help you clarify what would be most useful, whether that is a specific piece of project work, a broader review of your processes and workflows, team training or something else.

How soon can we start?

For consulting assignments, this will depend on my availability and the nature of the work you require. For most assignments, I am currently booking four weeks ahead. You will always receive a clear indication of likely scheduling during our initial conversation.

For editing and pre-press work, I am currently booking two weeks ahead.

How are your fees structured?

Exact fees depend on the nature and scope of the work and a formal quotation is provided before any project begins.

Most consulting projects are charged on a day‑rate basis, with the number of days agreed in advance to ensure you have a clear understanding of the likely cost. Short focused pieces of work can be priced as half‑day or fixed‑fee assignments when that is more appropriate. For longer engagements, I can provide staged billing reflecting the different types of work involved.

For editing work, I usually work on an hourly rate but I am also open to working on a per-thousand-words or fixed-fee basis.

Do you work remotely or in-person?

The format is flexible and shaped around what will be most effective for your organisation. Much of my work is well suited to remote collaboration and, although based in the UK, I work with clients in different countries and time zones. That said, in-person sessions can be arranged when practical and are often what I would recommend as the most beneficial way of making quick progress.

Are you insured?

Yes, I hold full professional indemnity insurance for all editorial and consulting work, as well as public liability insurance for in-person training and workshops. Please let me know if you need further details for your records.

How do you use AI in your work?

My position is to use AI selectively: it can be a useful tool for operational efficiency when applied with care and supported by well‑governed process automation. I use it in line with evolving professional standards and only for tasks where it offers sensible back‑office support: for example, website configuration, exploring alternative phrasings for product or service descriptions or speeding up background research. The insight, creativity, judgement and decision-making (including any associated human errors) are all my own.

  • I do not expose clients’ content, confidential information or intellectual property to external AI systems.
  • I do not use AI instead of traditional developmental editing, copyediting, proof-reading, design or illustration.
  • I do not publish AI-generated or AI-assisted work - all Vanitas Press titles are written by human authors.

If you would like to learn more about relevant ISO standards for responsible AI use, I recommend this free online course from the AIQI Consortium.

Do you have a privacy policy?

Yes, I take privacy and data protection seriously and I only collect information that is necessary for the work we do together. A full privacy policy is available here, outlining how your information is used, stored and safeguarded.

What is your background?

I have a long-standing career in publishing, operations and organisational improvement. My work combines practical experience with a focus on clarity, structured practice and the craft of publishing done well. You can read more about my background and skills on the About page.

How do I get in touch?

You are welcome to get in touch through the contact form below or by email. A short outline of your aims or the nature of your proposed project is helpful but not essential. I will respond promptly to arrange an initial conversation and to understand how I can support you.
